IMPORTANT: updated directions

It turns out that the directions we previously posted we're not very good. Here are some better ones:

Head east on 12300 south to 800 east and turn right. Turn left at the first intersection onto Pioneer Road/12400 south. Go straight until you pass the Draper City Hall and the library. Enter the park at 1130 east. The barn is white with a green roof and trim.

Invitations are here! Yay!

And they look FABULOUS. Looks like my next task is to get them addressed and mailed out. This is starting to feel real--I'm so excited! :D

Invitations ordered and a book review

Today I ordered the invitations from PSPrint.com. I designed them myself and then simply uploaded the design to their website--they're currently having a 60% off sale, so I got 500 invitations plus envelopes and 150 ceremony invite inserts (custom business cards) for about $150 total. I'm pretty proud of myself. Behold the awesomeness (and I'll have you know that I have absolutely no graphic design experience at all):

Yup, that's them. They should get here next week, and then I can start the exciting process of addressing and mailing them all. Yay! In other news: I now have a dress, and last week my mom and I got fabric to make my wedding veil and a lace bolero jacket. That'll be pretty exciting to do.

Also, last night I finished reading One Perfect Day: The Selling of the American Wedding by Rebecca Mead. It was fascinating and eye-opening, especially since I'm in the middle of planning a wedding myself. I checked it out from the library after reading an interview with the author, which you can find here if you're interested. I also wrote a short review on Goodreads, which you can read here.

FINAL DATE UPDATE: April 19th!

Okay, we FINALLY have settled on a date FOR SURE. April 19th is it, folks. We found an adorable little barn in Draper, UT that we can do both the ceremony and reception in. It wasn't available on the 20th, but we got it for Friday, April 19th. It's been paid for and everything now, so the date isn't going anywhere. I'm very sorry for all the whiplash--it's been crazy trying to get everything nailed down. But yeah, April 19th in Draper! I'M SO EXCITED! :D

Update: Wedding Location/Date Change

After some discussion, Adam and I have decided to change the wedding to April 20th in Utah--the date that was originally the Utah reception. We felt that doing this would allow more of our family (from both sides) to attend the wedding, since all of his extended family and most of mine lives there. I'll update with more details as we get things hammered out.

In which I break a fence

Last night I arranged to meet with the bishop to ask him to officiate and talk about the ceremony and stuff. Originally we were going to meet at the church, but apparently the guy who usually is at the church with the bishop when he's conducting weeknight interviews wasn't around, and there's a policy against the bishop interviewing women when he's alone in the building with them. Therefore, we arranged to meet at his house instead because his wife would be there.

I've only been to Bishop Brown's house a few times, and I've never driven there myself. It was also dark because, you know, it's January. I was pretty sure I'd be okay though, so I got directions from my dad and set out fifteen minutes before the appointment. Unfortunately, I had terrible trouble navigating. I missed two turnoffs, and underestimated how far I had to drive to get to his driveway and turned into the wrong one. However, I didn't realize my mistake until it was too late to turn around easily and I found myself at the end of a steep, narrow driveway cut off by two gates. I tried in vain to jockey the car (a big Suburban) around so I could get out. When that failed, I tried to just back out. Unfortunately I ended up backing into one of the gates, busting it open. I didn't realize that I broke it though, and assumed that someone had kindly opened it for me so I could turn around. I drove up onto the guy's lawn because I thought he had a roundabout. (He didn't.) So, the homeowner came out of the house and explained to me that I broke his fence and was most definitely not where I was supposed to be. So... I gave him my number and the license plate number and he guided me out of his driveway (and off of his lawn). He was actually very patient; I think he probably saw that I was confused and upset and took pity on me.

I called my dad and informed him of the events that had transpired, and he called the bishop and sent him to come find me. Apparently from how upset I was on the phone, he was expecting to find me lying in a ditch and completely missed me sitting at the end of my hapless victim's driveway. (I broke a fence!! Also, I thought I'd broken the car. Turns out that I didn't do much other than scratch the paint and knock the fence off its track.) In the end I went back home and my dad drove me to the bishop's house. I'm going to have my dad drive me there in the future. :P

Now that I've finished relating my sorry tale that is only tangentially related to wedding stuff, I'll get back on topic. I met with Bishop Brown and discussed vows. I'd put together a general idea of what I want, and he told me that he'd check with the powers that be in the LDS church about what rules he has to follow and get back to me. From what he told me, it sounds like we have a lot of latitude when it comes to things leading up to and following the vows; he's just not sure about the wording of the vows themselves. I'm pretty certain that we'll be able to come up with a formulation that both makes me and Adam happy and abides by the rules. Also, I'm super excited about the ceremony itself and I'm pretty sure that I'm going to cry at some point.

Also, I have a wedding dress!!! I visited David's Bridal last October and tried some things on, but wedding stuff got kind of put on the back burner after that until Christmas was over. Yesterday I called the store to ask about a sale they had going on, and it turns out that the gown that I'd had my eye on had a 12-week wait time. Eek! So I needed to get in and make a decision pretty quickly. I didn't end up getting the one I originally liked--I found a different one that I fell absolutely in love with. I'm just waiting for it to be shipped to my house. After we have the dress, my mom is going to make me a veil and matching lace bolero jacket to wear with it. I'm really freaking excited about it.

Finally, I've settled on wedding colors. Burgundy and silver. Super pretty, no? The next order of business is to get venues squared away so I can send out invitations--I'm hoping to have that done by the end of next week. There are some details beyond my control that we're waiting on there.

So yeah, that's the latest news from the Colburn-Weber wedding planning front. I'll update next time I have anything interesting to share.
